Peter Mawanga has performed everywhere from Celtic Connections to BBC. He has earned international acclaim for his unique musical style, "Nyanja vibes," which has captivated audiences on stages across Africa, Europe, and the U.S. Combining traditional Nyanja instruments like the nsansi (thumb piano), visekese (shakers), mangolo ngondo, xylophone, and kaligo (one-string instrument) with contemporary elements, his music is often described as therapeutic, embodying the core values of peace and calm found in Nyanja culture.
The Nyanja people, native to the shores of Lake Malawi, are known for their peaceful nature, and Malawi itself, often called the "warm heart of Africa," has a history free of civil conflict. This heritage inspires the soothing and joyful sounds of Nyanja instruments, designed to evoke emotions that promote healing, peace, and celebration.
Peter’s creative journey led him to found The Amaravi Movement and develop Nyanja afro-vibes, a genre that gained global recognition with the release of his album Mau A Malawi (Voices of Malawi). This groundbreaking work, featuring personal stories from those affected by AIDS, was born out of a seven- month project during which Peter and award-winning violinist Andrew Finn Magill collected moving narratives from 26 individuals. The album launch was sponsored by the University of North Carolina and the U.S. Department of State, making Peter the first African musician to perform for the U.S. State Department.
Peter’s performances transcend music. They are immersive experiences blending song, film, dance, and storytelling, often featuring dramatic monologues. His mission is to show that music goes beyond entertainment; it is a tool for healing and personal transformation, echoing the Nyanja belief in music's ability to reach the inner self and foster peace.
